College Susan Schuenke
In the fall of 2002, Vision of Hope Ministries opened the doors of our Pre-K-Grade 13 school, College Susan Schuenke (CSS), for the first time. In the beginning, there were nearly 100 students. The motto for CSS is Ad Astra, or to the stars. At CSS, we are helping needy Haitian students reach for the stars by offering a solid Christian education that can help them break the cycle of poverty they are living in while making a lasting positive impact on the nation of Haiti.
College Susan Schuenke is recognized by Haiti's Minstry of Education as one of the best schools in northern Haiti. CSS students typically receive high scores on the Haitian Education Ministry's standardized tests. Many of our students have continued their education at the university level and have become doctors, nurses, and business leaders.
In the 2012-2013 school year, there were nearly 900 students attending school at College Susan Schuenke. CSS seeks to minister to the educational, spiritual and physical needs of the students who attend school there. The students are studying Chemistry, Physics, Math, Spanish, French, Creole, English, History, Christian education, Writing, Reading, Health and Computers. All grades are included in the school. Often, there are older students in the lower grades because those students have been unable to attend school every year. Many of the students come from very poor families who sacrifice deeply in order to have their child attend school. Many students are only able to attend school thanks to the generous donations of our supporters. A year of solid Christian education costs $330. We need your help supporting one or more of our students. Thank you in advance for your support of these young Haitians!
School Nutrition is important because food insecurity is a major problem in Haiti. A school age child often will receive only a few nutritious meals a week. Students who are hungry struggle to focus and learn. College Susan Schuenke provides hot nutritious lunches to our students as funds are made available through donations to our Nutrition Fund. One meal costs 75¢. Every penny of your donation to the Nutrition Fund is used to feed the kids!
Making an Impact...
Wisler St. Vil came to College Susan Schuenke in 2002 and was with the first group of students who graduated in 2005. One thing we learned about him was that he was extremely gifted. He always got the highest score in any exam session. After graduation, we helped Wisler move to Santiago, Dominican Republic in order to attend the “Universidad Technologia de Santiago (UTESA). He entered a program in Medicine for students who just graduated from High School. Wisler went to school every summer in order to graduate early and he was able to complete the program in 6 years. He graduated (Magna Cum Laude) as a medical doctor.
Wisler participated in a general knowledge competition for graduates of Medical Schools in Dominican Republic. He was the champion. For winning he received a ¼ scholarship to a school where he will be prepared to take the class
that qualifies him to take an exam for students who want to practice medicine in US hospitals.
